The timing also makes perfect sense as Final Fantasy XIII is turning 10 years old in less than 3 weeks. With Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster and Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age now available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC (in addition to Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII and Final Fantasy IX) it seems Square Enix is finally moving onto The Lightning Saga. Virtuos has been a fantastic partner to Square Enix this past decade, doing the heavy lifting for the development of Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster and Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age and then developing all of their following ports. Now the PC versions have been quietly updated in the background and thanks to SteamDB we can see that they are doing tests, and the description for the tests says "For Virtuos". This raised some questions as the first two games in particular still have a lot of issues on PC while the Xbox versions are of course the backwards compatible Xbox 360 versions, enhanced on Xbox One X. Recently there was the announcement that they would all be released on the Windows Store in 2020 as part of their additions to Xbox Game Pass for Console and PC.
They released a couple of good updates for the games shortly following their releases but the bulk of the issues remained and Square Enix moved on. The PC ports of the XIII series were developed internally (something Square Enix rarely ever does) by a team of programmers who worked on the games along with producer Yoshinori Kitase. The main issues are related to frame rates and graphics, but there's various other issues to varying sizes as well.
